These Banana Oatmeal Cookies are hands down the best banana flavored cookie I have ever had. Not only are they are moist and chewy for days, they are unmistakably banana-y.

Banana may be one of those flavors that may get lost once you inhale with it. It can be really subtle flavor. It always bums me out once that happens, because I really like the taste of banana. And thus does the hubs.

When good flavored banana treats come along, we move a little mad for them.

And they're so moist, they melt in your mouth. Plus, with both oats and banana in them, they're basically healthy, right? And ideal for breakfast!

Making them is just as easy as eating them.

You start by mixing all those lovely components together.

I must warn you. The odor of that mixture -- together with all the banana -- is equally intoxicating. The hubs was in the kitchen making the dough together with me (we made a bargain that contained him baking with me) and we both had to work hard to not put our faces, or a straw, right in to it.

Then you add all of the ingredients (which means you simply use one bowl yay!) And combine it all together!

To bake them, spoon about a tablespoon of bread and produce a thick disc, rather than a ball. They spread somewhat when baking, so don't put them too close together. Bake them for about 10-12 minutes for a nice, moist cookiecutter. So yummy!

1 additional thing I really like about this recipe is really where it came from.

My grandmother (my father's mom) passed out in 2008. Once I started baking a lot a few years back, my uncle gave me cookbook he'd had didn't use. I've had it on my list to make numerous her desserts ever since.

It was a tradition for my grandma to make them every Christmas! She also gave everyone a large tin of these, which had been really a feat with 6 sons.

I know just how much of a feat it was! My goodness. She made them with a conventional gaufrette iron that goes over a open fire. My dad and I had them around the stove. They cook very fast and you have to be exact. Too long and they kind of disintegrated to iron. Overly long and they burned into the Learn More Here iron and we all needed to clean it out.

My father was pouring the batter and removing the cookies, I was working the iron, the hubs was timing things. It required a number of tries to get it , but they had been so great! I've attempted to make them on my own and it never works. I'd like to share the recipe, but the dang irons are all so hard to discover. And expensive. It is such an enjoyable recipe book to check through, also. There are so many handwritten pages, including clippings and newspaper recipes that were taped into the book. I love the way they used to compose recipes in the paper -- they had the individual who filed it's name and adorable little tales. It is so fun to browse ! What a different time on earth!

Anyways, I do not really know where this recipe came from. The newspaper looks like it had been on a flier out of their square dancing class or something (they were big to square dance ). It's definitely from West Virginia, in which they dwelt.

Either way, I'm so happy to finally talk about a recipe from her novel with you! I made a few adjustments to make them thicker and more puffier and they are delicious. There'll be more to come from her recipe book, but for now enjoy the banana.

Banana Oatmeal Cookies


Yield: 34-36 COOKIES


1 cup brown sugar, packed

1/2 cup sugar

1 egg

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 1/2 tsp cinnamon

1 teaspoon baking soda

1/4 teaspoon ground cloves

2 tsp cornstarch



2. Add flour, cinnamon, baking soda, cloves and cornstarch and mix until combined.

3. Stir in vanilla.


5. Flatten dough just a little bit, into thick disks. They'll spread a bit when boiled.

6. Bake for 10-12 minutes or until edges just begin to gold.

7. Remove from oven and cool on cookie sheet for 3-4 minutes, then proceed into cooling rack to finish cooling.
